Did you ever wonder what was planned and what happened with the cemeteries that were a part of the land taken to be part of the Tocks Island project or part of the National Recreation Area? Dave Pierce, local journalist and author of "Tocks Island: Dammed if you do", will be talking about just that on April 1st and taking us on a walk to view one of the family cemeteries still in the park.
Cemetery Talk and Walk
We will start at the Zion Lutheran Church, just off River Rd north of Shawnee-on-Delaware on Saturday, April 1st at 10AM, Dave will give us an overview of the area and the special role cemeteries took during the planning of the Tocks Island Dam. We will then visit an interesting active cemetery across Zion Church Rd (aka Churchhill Dr) before setting out, with those who are willing an able, on a 3/4-mile walk to an old family cemetery, the Michael family, hidden in the trees just off the McDade Trail. The ground in and around this cemetery is uneven, and the old cemetery is among the brambles (most are rose bushes gone wild) and trees between two planted fields. So proper shoes, pants, and walking sticks are recommended.
Parking is extremely limited, so you must pre-register using the form below or send an email to info@friendsofdewanps.org. We will be in touch once we know how many people are attending! We may need to shuttle people from Smithfield Beach or the Riverview parking area off River Rd.
There is no cost to attend this event, although there will be a donation box available if you would like to support our programs.
