Tocks Island Historical Walking Tour
Sorry, the maximum number of people has been reached. If you fill out the registration below, you will be placed on a waiting list in case anyone cancels. We also plan on offering this tour again, and you will be the first to be contacted when that happens, so you may sign-up for that one if you still desire to do so before the event is made public.
On Saturday November 6, 2021, at 10 AM the Friends of the Delaware Water Gap National Recreation area will be hosting a walking tour of Tocks Island. The tour will be lead by David Pierce, local writer and journalist, who possesses excellent knowledge of the area and history of the doomed Tocks Island Dam.
The tour begins at Smithfield Beach, off River Road on the PA side of the park, with a brief explanation of this area, previously known as Pardee’s Beach, and a review of some of the historical maps of the area and plans for the Tocks Island Dam. The group will then walk south-southwest on the McDade Trail, noting where former summer and year-round residences of individuals were once was located. We continue south on the McDade Trail to view Tocks Island. Along this walk, David will describe the area as it relates to the plans for the dam, and also the history of various sections along the way. On the return trip, people will be free to ask questions or drop back from the group for a more leisurely walk or to capture a look at some of the fall foliage.
The trail walk will take us about 1.25 miles south along the McDade Trail and then return. There are some ups and downs, so the walk is considered moderate. Proper shoes and bug repellent is strongly suggested and face masks will be mandatory, as the group will not likely be able to maintain the 6 feet apart requirement for outdoor contact.
The tour will be limited to 20 persons due to the COVID-19 pandemic, so you must pre-registered to attend. The cost of this event is free to members of the Friends and a $5 donation for non-members to be collected during the pre-registration process.
